What to ask a therapist.
A consultation is a chance to learn about the therapist’s approach and decide whether working together feels like a good fit. You can ask practical questions as well as questions about the work itself.
- What experience do you have with the concerns that bring me here?
- How would we decide what to focus on, and what might sessions look like?
- How will we discuss progress or adjust our approach if something is not helping?
- What are the fees, insurance options, and expectations for attendance?
- How does online therapy work, and what should I know about privacy?
You do not need to share your full story in a first conversation. It is okay to ask questions, take your time, and say what would help you feel more comfortable.
